Sold out in 48 hours: the album nobody was waiting for

The album went up at midnight with no announcement at all. Within two days it was top of the streaming charts, and the tour tickets went straight after it.

There is no planned campaign on the label’s side. The rise in listening came entirely from people passing it on.

Someone in the room and someone watching a screen are not seeing the same work. That difference explains most of the argument on its own.

How it happened

The point the critics split on is not the work itself, but which tradition it belongs to.

For anyone who knows the earlier work this turn is not a surprise. What surprises is how late the attention arrived.

What comes next

Ticket sales are moving regardless of the row. In live performance those two things usually pull in the same direction.

Extra dates are being discussed but the artist’s team are in no hurry. Second releases of this kind usually do not go as well as the first, and they know it.
