Open again after thirty years: the museum’s back gallery returns

The gallery was closed in 1996 on safety grounds. After nine years of restoration it is open again, and the ceiling can be seen in one piece for the first time since the day it shut.

Visitor numbers are capped for the first week while the humidity settles.

The point the critics split on is not the work itself, but which tradition it belongs to.

What the restoration involved

For anyone who knows the earlier work this turn is not a surprise. What surprises is how late the attention arrived.

Ticket sales are moving regardless of the row. In live performance those two things usually pull in the same direction.

How to visit

The institution’s statement is short and carefully written. Between the lines you can read the effort not to feed the story.

Entry is by timed ticket for now. The museum expects to raise the limit after the first three months.
