Leak: the new handset’s camera housing appears for the first time

The images turned up first in an accessory maker’s mould catalogue. Two days later a case drawing from a separate source repeated the same layout, and the rumour started being taken seriously.

There is neither confirmation nor denial from the manufacturer. In this industry silence usually means a launch is close.

What decides how fast this spreads is not the technology but how long older handsets keep getting updates.

What can be seen

At the user end what changes is usually just the interface. The real change happens behind it, where nobody is looking.

Manufacturers tend not to comment on this sort of thing. By now the silence counts as information too.

How reliable it is

Independent tests are run in laboratory conditions. In everyday use the picture is a little more honest.

A mould drawing shows the shape, not the specification. A bigger camera bump does not mean a bigger sensor; that can only be measured after launch.
